Thomas Hudson, A Life in Art

Thomas Hudson is a distinguished artist whose career spans several decades and includes notable contributions to both medical illustration and children’s literature. Hudson graduated from the Cooper School of Art in Cleveland, Ohio, with a certificate in Production Art. His journey in the professional world began as a medial illustrator for AcroMed Corporation, where he honed his skills for nine years before transitioning to freelance illustration.

Hudson’s versatility and talent quickly garnered attention, leading to commissions from a variety of prestigious companies. His first children’s book, Garrett Morgan, was published by Modern Curriculum Press. This was followed by collaborations with a plethora of renowned clients including, Chelsea House Publishers, Golden Books Publishing, The Pilgrim Press, Kapp and Associates, David C. Cook Publishing, Laerdal Medical Corporation, American Cancer Society, United Way, Hardcourt Brace & Company, The Cleveland Playhouse, University Hospitals, and Holt, Rinehart & Winston.

Driven by a passion for natural realism, Hudson’s artwork is characterized by its detailed and lifelike quality. His primary theme, “REMINISCENT: Our Times Before Yesterday,” features pencil drawings that capture the essence of a historical and vintage era of the African American community. Other prominent series, “Uniforms and Work,” showcases oil paintings of individuals in their professional attire, offering a unique glimpse into their roles and identities through their uniforms. And a series of plumbing still life paintings in oil, of old, rusty and vintage plumbing tools.

Series REMINISCENT: Our Times Before Yesterday

My artwork is a profound journey through the lives and experiences of African Americans from a bygone era. In my series, I endeavor to capture the essence of daily life and unique personalities of individuals during this significant period in history. Through meticulous pencil drawings, I seek to bring forth the dignity, resilience, and beauty inherent in everyday moments.

Each piece in this series is a testament to the rich heritage and cultural legacy of African Americans. By focusing on ordinary people, I aim to highlight their stories, preserving memories of yesterday with natural realism. These drawings and paintings are not merely portraits, they are narratives that resonate with a sense of familiarity and nostalgia, inviting viewers to connect with the past in a deeply personal way. The characteristics of my artwork and defined by intricate details, subtle shading, precise line work, and natural colors which collectively create a lifelike and intimate portrayal of my subjects. My technique emphasizes the textures and expressions that bring out the unique qualities of every individual, making each piece a vivid and emotional representation of their lives.

My artwork conveys a sense of historical authenticity and personal narrative. The expressions and poses capture moments of life, evoking emotions of nostalgia and curiosity about the subjects’ lives, reflecting a sense of time and place. Additionally, I have included famous people in this series who were part of the eras, adding depth and context to the historical narrative.
